About Held Massage Therapy

“Grief is a contraction, a tightening. Softening is kindness.” -Megan Devine

People often think of massage as a luxury to indulge in when you’re already feeling good (at spa, during a vacation) or as a way to fix something that’s wrong (recurring low back pain or tight shoulders).

But touch is the most primal means of human care and connection.

Times of loss and change are stressful, isolating, and exhausting. It takes a toll on our bodies, often at a time that physical wellbeing can't make it onto the list of responsibilities and priorities.

And too often, we feel distinctly unsupported during the hardest times. Our culture is not yet skilled in holding space for those who are hurting. As a result many people feel alone, silenced and like they're "doing it wrong."

So we do things a little differently around here. We create sacred experiences that include massage and honor the hardest parts of life. We lovingly tend to the deeply-human and painful times of grief, loss, growth and change.

In addition to hands-on bodywork, our sessions incorporate time for companionship and listening. We are a community of people who are healing together in sacred circles and inspired monthly workshops.

Dear one, you are warmly invited to be held here: in body, heart and spirit.

Answers to your Questions

"If I had a lifetime to do it I couldn’t adequately express how perfect the experience was.  The space, the words, the cards, the massage, the bowls … all that… but mostly the energy. I do believe we are born again every day, but sometimes the transformation is so powerful, so important, it needs to be marked on a calendar and its anniversary celebrated. In many ways I didn’t come out of that cozy warm womb of your space until I woke this morning, so I’m considering today my ReBirthday! It feels wonderful!"
- Christine from Pearl River

"I feel absolutely amazing when I leave here. It’s not like anywhere else.
I could feel that you were listening to my body, and knew exactly what my muscles needed."
- Grace from Livingston

"I feel this heavy weight lifted off me. You have poetic hands. I never get to experience my mind quieting down, but during my massage I was in an entirely different place. That was amazing."
- Nicole from Glen Ridge

"Held has a caring, loving way of treating you mind, body & soul. After a current bout with my PTSD, I saw her for treatments & walked out feeling rejuvenated and safe in my body again. This is a unique approach to massage therapy by an expert in her field."
- Esther from Fair Lawn

"Thanks again for a lovely massage yesterday. Your warmth, care and authenticity were truly palpable. I definitely felt "held" in the ways that I needed."
- Linda from Bloomfield

Meet the Held Team

⭐️ Jess Larsen Brennan, Founding Massage Therapist

“In any situation, the clearest, strongest energy prevails. So bring an energy of love and truth, wholeness and compassion, power and presence to any encounter. It will transform you, the situation and everyone involved.” - Hiro Boga

“Doula” is a greek word that means servant, or helper. A doula is a companion, an experienced guide through important, and often painful, rites of passage.

Jess has been a birth doula, childbirth educator, and midwives’ assistant for more than 15 years, comforting, supporting and holding those in pain. She became an end-of-life doula after a death in the family showed her how much birth and death have in common.

During periods of deep personal loss, Jess wished for the kind of service doulas provide, to support grief's intensely-physical and “in the body” nature. She also experienced how “companioning” grief support helped more than prescriptive (do-this, not-that), platitudes or cheerleading (“it’ll all be ok!”). Since grief doulas didn't exist, Jess later founded Held to meet that need.

Jess lives with her family in Montclair, New Jersey.

⭐️ Bahia Miller, Senior Massage Therapist

“Healing is a long, slow ceremony of coming home. And we are not meant to do it alone. Unresolved places within us hold an emotional charge that can make living life hard. It has been my experience — and that of my clients — that relief and freedom are possible."
- Bahia Miller

Bahia’s advanced bodywork integrates Craniosacral Unwinding, Thai Yoga Massage and other modalities to help clients come home to themselves. Nurturing touch and deep listening are at the core of all she does.

Bahia is also an Internal Family Systems practitioner, a yoga teacher (IFS) and a birth doula. She is known for her nourishing presence, her grounded elegance in blending modalities to meet the unique needs of each client, and a mastery level of hands-on skill and experience.

Bahia moved to New Jersey from California and now lives with her family in Montclair. She is honored to be joining Jess in holding space at Held.

⭐️ Willow Woods, Senior Massage Therapist

“I love that my clients leave feeling energetically lighter, more grounded, clearer of intention, centered in their bodies, and more open to receiving the amazing things the world has to offer them."
- Willow Woods

Willow is a multifaceted, multipassionate healer of many modalities who believes deeply in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. With over a decade of massage therapy experience, she has seen and heard firsthand the many ways the body speaks and begs for relief, and has created a wide variety of approaches to provide people with the tools to deeply care for their vessel.

Willow's clients feel deeply seen, heard and supported in session, resulting in deeper levels of healing than those that occur on just the physical plane.

Possibilities inside a session with Willow include intuitive massage therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, reiki energy healing, shamanic journeying, scrying, tarot reading, Thai massage stretching, cupping and gua sha, yin yoga, reflexology, and more!

When she isn’t with clients, Willow can be found mountain biking, snowboarding, drumming, dancing, or snuggled up reading with her husband and 3 cats.

⭐️ Jessica Maria Vasco, Certified Breathwork Facilitator

“We are not here to 'fix you.' You aren’t broken.
We are about creating a space where you can connect with your body, your heart, your soul and your truth
so that you can guide yourself forward."

- Jessica Maria Vasco

Jessica Maria Vasco is the founder of Vida Healing, a breathwork healing practice in Old Bridge, NJ with services at Held in Bloomfield.

Vida Healing was created with the mission to help clients let go of all that stands in the way of feeling true joy and alignment.

Jessica became a trauma-informed breathwork facilitator through Owaken Breathwork and now serves clients with a wide range of uniquely-lived experiences. Her certification includes an understanding of non-ordinary states of consciousness, inner child work, limiting beliefs, family dynamics, and optimal post-session integration strategies.

Jessica brings deep empathy and wisdom from her personal history of integrating PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, chronic pain, and an eating disorder. She found that breathwork was a key tool that unlocked nervous system regulation, trauma integration and a renewed perspective on life. She now brings profound healing opportunities to those she serves.

Jessica has a background in culinary arts and combines her skill and passion with her South American ancestry in the ceremonial cacao that is offered during each breathwork session.

Her parents immigrated from Colombia to New Jersey where Jessica was born and still resides with her family. In her free time, you can find her cooking for loved ones, listening to music, and exploring nature.

Gratuities are transformed into donations.

We are committed to building a community of connection, in which we believe:

~ The only way through the hardest parts of life is together. Connection saves.
~ Helping each other through hard times doesn’t have to be difficult.
~ When we vote for self-care, it can ripple out and support others too.

To live out these values, when clients wish to leave a little extra, it is forwarded on as a donation to Pockets of Light, a Montclair nonprofit whose vision is "a world in which all people who have suffered the pain of losing a baby find hope, empathy and healing – and are empowered and encouraged to tell their stories and remember their children."

Pockets of Light offers peer-led weekly meetings, support groups for men and women who have experienced miscarriage, infant loss and stillbirth, and individual peer support.
